You’re Not Alone
If you’re grieving, questioning, or simply feeling like the ground beneath you has shifted—you’re not alone.
I created this space for people like you. People who are trying to live with purpose, even through pain.
Whether you’ve just experienced a heartbreaking loss, or you’re walking with someone who has, I want to offer what I’ve spent my life practicing: presence, peace, and a path forward.
Â
Who I Am (in a few sentences)
I'm a hospice chaplain, pastor, spiritual teacher, and grief support guide with over 30 years of experience helping people of all faiths (and no faith) find peace in the midst of loss. Â
Through stories, compassion, and hard-won wisdom, I walk with people through the hardest seasons of life—and help them uncover purpose, wholeness, and meaning along the way.
Â
My Purpose is Peace
My life purpose is peace.
Not just the absence of conflict—but the presence of joy, clarity, fulfillment, justice, love, and meaning.
Peace is what we crave when everything falls apart. And it’s what I’ve devoted my life to helping others find—whether they’re just starting to ask what matters, or they’re walking through the unthinkable.
Â
Who I am and What I Believe
I’m a hospice chaplain, spiritual teacher, life coach, and longtime United Methodist pastor. I’m also a husband, father, grandfather, martial artist, and story/joke-teller with a soft spot for real conversation.Â
But more than anything?Â
I’m a guide.
Not because I have it all figured out.
But because I’ve walked with people of all faiths and no faith at all through life’s greatest challenges—and I’ve learned how to walk through it, too.
Â
Peace Meets Grief
Â
Grief is one of the places where peace matters most—and is often hardest to find.
That’s why I created The First Year Grief Roadmap—a compassionate, practical, and spiritual course designed to walk with you through the first 12 months after the death of someone you love.
 It’s not a quick fix.
It’s not about “getting over it.”
It’s about honoring what was, facing what is, and finding your footing for what could be.
“I need 5 more Toms, one for each day of the week.  His presence is so calming.”

Â
The Long Road That Brought Me HereÂ
For more than three decades, I’ve guided people through life’s most sacred and painful moments—helping them discover who they are, why they’re here, and how to live and love with no regrets.Â
That same voice—the one that is direct, open, grounded in story and humor, and full of hard-won hope—shows up in everything I do: in hospice rooms, in online courses, in coaching calls, and on YouTube at Mastering Mortality.
Â
A Spiritual Guide with Wide RootsÂ
Though I’m rooted in the Christian tradition, my spiritual walk has been shaped by many paths:
- Zen Buddhism taught me the power of presence and the sacredness of each breath.
- Aikido, the “Art of Peace,” taught me to stay connected and caring in the face of conflict.
- Conversational Intelligence (C-IQ) gave me tools to help people and organizations lead with empathy and clarity.
And every day, I keep learning—from the people I serve, and the sacred moments we share.

Behind the Scenes: Life with Winter
The best thing that ever happened to me?
My wife, Winter.
She’s the love of my life. Together we’ve raised three beautiful and talented adult children, and we now get to revel in the joy of our three wild, wise, and hilarious grandchildren.
When I’m not writing, coaching, teaching, or praying with someone at the edge of life, you’ll find me playing a game with Winter, sipping tea, or laughing at something inappropriate…or appropriate.
Â
What Mastering Mortality Means
Mastering Mortality, my YouTube channel and my life’s work, isn’t about conquering death.
It’s about living so fully that, when the end comes, you can say:
“I loved passionately. I lived my purpose. And it was really, really good.”
If you’re grieving, wondering, or longing for something deeper—this is for you.
As my daughter once wrote on a bookmark when she was twelve: “Not all who wonder are lost.”
